Equipment

  • 9x13-inch Baking Pan
  • Mixer (Hand or Stand)
  • Spatula
  • Knife or Cake Cutter
  • Cooling Rack
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 1 box of vanilla cake mix (or homemade cake mix)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup of water
  • ½ cup of vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp of vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

For the topping:

  • Fresh strawberries (sliced)
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Fresh raspberries

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan. Follow the instructions on the cake mix box, or if using homemade ingredients, mix the dry ingredients first, then add the wet ingredients. Beat until smooth.
  • Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely on a cooling rack.
  • Make the Frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. In another bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture.
  • Assemble the Cake: Once the cake has cooled, spread the frosting evenly over the top using a spatula.
  • Create the Flag Design: Arrange the fresh blueberries in the upper left corner to form the blue section of the flag. Use the strawberries to create red stripes across the cake. For the remaining white stripes, you can use the whipped frosting.
  • Chill and Serve: Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to allow the frosting to set. Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

When decorating your flag cake, take your time to place the fruit neatly. You can create a small square of blueberries in the top-left corner, with alternating stripes of strawberries and whipped cream for the rest of the cake. This will create a perfect patriotic effect. Also, be sure to cool the cake completely before frosting it to prevent melting.
